FAQs

  • Can a beginner FLOAT this section of Swatara?
    • YES! BUT... basic boat handling skills and basic 'water reading' for low spots is recommended.
  • Can a beginner RIDE the most technical part (single track)?
    • YES! BUT... expect narrow trails with creek crossings, log hopping, roots, rocks, hill climbing, loose surfaces... nothing wrong with walking some. Ride within your ability and equipment.
  • Can I rent a kayak?
    • Cocoa Kayaks has agreed to offer rentals at the discounted rate of $30. This would include transportation of kayak, paddle, vest, emergency whistle and water bottle holder. He can be reached at Benemiller@cocoakayak.com OR give him a call - 717-756-5766.
  • Can we race as a tandem during Leg 3 FLOAT?
    • YES! But the tandem paddler must do the Leg 1 run and handoff Leg 2 ride to their tandem partner. When the partner leaves the RT to ride, the tandem paddler runner will run from Trout Run (run/ride RT) to Waterville Bridge (ride/float RT). We may add some extra running length for the tandem paddler during this leg of the run. We will try it this way this year, but is subject to change for 2018... we want FUN... but also FAIR competition.
  • Do participants need to have someone there to collect the mountain bike as soon as that leg is finished, or can participants wait until they are finished with the entire race and then go back to get it? If they get them at the end, will there be people stationed with the bikes until they are collected by the participants at the end?
    • The bikes will be picked up by racers at the end of the race, volunteers will remain at RT until all equipment is picked up and area is cleared. Both your bike and your kayak will be tagged with your BIB number. Volunteers at each transition during and after will not allow someone to leave with equipment unless they have the ACTUAL RACING BIB. If someone other than the racer picks up the equipment, they must have the racers actual BIB.
  • Type of kayak?
    • Sit On Top or Sit In. Single or Tandem, maximum length 14' 5".
  • Can I register for just the RUN?
    • YES! 5K Leg 1 Trail Runners will do an out and back, turning around at 1.55 miles.
    • You may not register for just the RIDE or the FLOAT.
  • Type of bike?
    • Mountain bike with off road tires and at least front suspension is recommended.
  • Required Equipment:
    • Helmet for RIDE
    • Mountain bike for RIDE
    • Approved life vest (PFD) for FLOAT
    • Emergency whistle for FLOAT
    • Paddle for FLOAT
    • Kayak for FLOAT, your own or Cocoa Kayak's
    • GOOD sense of HUMOR!
